GSK Investing $800 M in US Site

GSK plans to invest $800 million to expand its operations in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to establish a biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub that would integrate commercial production, research and development (R&D), and advanced digital capabilities, as reported by the Office of the Governor in Pennsylvania. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, and the expansion will occur over the next five years (as reported on October 9, 2026).

The expansion project will include the demolition of existing buildings and construction of new and enhanced facilities, including a commercial-scale biologics manufacturing facility capable of supporting both clinical and commercial supply, a co-located research and development pilot plant to accelerate tech transfer and process development, and a centralized quality control lab and manufacturing science & technology (MSAT) hub. The expansion will create more than 300 new jobs over the next five years and retain approximately 4,500 existing full-time jobs.

The company’s new $800-million investment follows a previously announced $800-million investment in 2024 to add drug-substance manufacturing and additional drug-product manufacturing capabilities at GSK’s current site in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The expansion will double the size and capacity of the Marietta site.

The first facility will be capable of manufacturing sterile liquid vaccines and medicines and will also house a R&D pilot plant to manufacture medicines for clinical trials. The second facility will be a new vaccines drug-substance facility dedicated to manufacturing products based on the company’s Multiple Antigen Presenting System (MAPS), a vaccine technology platform. The drug-substance facility is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2027, and the drug-product facility by the end of 2028 as the company reported in its 2024 release in announcing the investment.

Both investments are part of a broader $30-billion US capital expansion plan announced by the company in September 2025.
