Indian Gov’t To Invest $1.1 Bn To Support Biologics & Biosimilars Hub

The Indian government has announced the launch of Biopharma Shakti, a national initiative with an investment of $1.1 billion over five years, aimed at strengthening India’s end-to-end ecosystem for biologics and biosimilars.

The initiative is designed to support domestic development and manufacturing of biopharmaceutical products and medicines, reduce import dependence, and enhance India’s competitiveness in global biologics supply chains.

As part of the initiative, India will establish three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) and upgrade seven existing NIPERs. Additionally, the government announced a proposal to develop over 1,000 accredited clinical trial sites across the country. This is expected to improve India’s capacity to conduct clinical trials for biologics and biosimilars.
