Chemicals/Chemical API Manufacturing

Veranova Completes $10-M API Mfg Expansion
Macfarlan Smith, a CDMO of intermediates and small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and a subsidiary of Veranova (formerly known as Johnson Matthey Health), has completed a $10-million expansion of mid-scale active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing capacity at its facility in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The $10-million expansion is one of two recent investments, with a second expansion currently undergoing commissioning (as reported on February 8, 2023). Once completed, these two expansions will represent $17 million in investments.

Veranova is the new name of Johnson Matthey Health following the sale of the business from Johnson Matthey to Altaris Capital Partners in June 2022 and the subsequent rebranding of the business as Veranova.

Biologics Manufacturing

Bionova To Expand Biomanufacturing Capacity
Bionova Scientific, a Fremont, California-based CDMO of biologics and part of Asahi Kasei Group, has begun commissioning a replacement headquarters and development center in Fremont, California.

Bionova Scientific currently operates two facilities in Fremont: a headquarters and development and GMP manufacturing facility and a dedicated warehouse and storage facility. The new facility will act as a replacement headquarters and development center. Administrative offices and labs for cell-line development, process development, and analytical services are expected to be moved to the new facility in mid-2023. The expansion will enable the company  to quadruple its current biologics GMP manufacturing capacity in the old headquarters site shortly thereafter.

Center for Breakthrough Medicines Launches Plasmid Mfg
The Center for Breakthrough Medicines (CBM), a King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based CDMO of cell- and gene-therapies, has launched a plasmid manufacturing offering, Precision Plasmids.

The offering has different forms: Precision Plasmids R&D grade, for pre- and early clinical phases; and Precision Plasmids Pro grade for toxicology studies, Phase I-II  vector production, or as a starting material for mRNA. Both Precision Plasmids R&D and Pro are available now while Precision Plasmids GMP-grade will be available in April 2023.

Thermo Fisher, Celltrio Partner for Cell Line Automation Platform
Thermo Fisher Scientific and Celltrio, a manufacturer of robotics-based products and services for the life-sciences industry, have formed a collaboration for a fully automated cell-culture system.

The collaboration will integrate Thermo Scientific’s Momentum workflow scheduling software with the Celltrio’s RoboCell cell-line automation platform for high-throughput automated cell-line culturing and maintenance. Celltrio’s RoboCell systems distributed in Europe will now use Momentum software for work scheduling and data management. Thermo Fisher will also take on exclusive responsibility for sales, installation, and support of the RoboCell system in Europe, with the possibility of extending into other geographies in the future.
