Catalent in Spray Dry Expansion
Catalent Pharma Solutions has increased its spray drying capacity at its San Diego, California facility with the installation of an additional GEA Niro Mobile Minor unit and a third Gerties Mini-Pactor, a high pressure, precision roller compactor. This is the first strategic investment planned for the San Diego facility in the immediate future, according to the company.
Catalent gained the San Diego facility with its acquisition of Pharmatek Laboratories, a contract development and manufacturing organization, in September 2016. The acquisition added early phase drug development capabilities, brought spray drying into Catalent’s portfolio of drug formulation and delivery technologies, and expanded Catalent’s capability for handling highly potent compounds.
The facility comprises 68,000 square feet of laboratory, manufacturing, and support space, with two analytical labs, two formulation labs, four engineering rooms, and nine certified ISO class 8 manufacturing suites. The site also includes 18,000 square feet of laboratory, manufacturing, and support space dedicated to development and manufacturing of highly potent compounds.
