Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult Opens $83.8-Million Mfg Plant

Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult (CGT Catapult), a center of excellence funded by Innovate UK, the UK government’s innovation agency, to support cell-therapy organizations, has opened a cell- and gene- therapy manufacturing center in Stevenage, England.

Backed by over £60 million ($83.8 million) from the UK Government investment as part of its Industrial Strategy, a long-term plan to boost productivity and earning power of people throughout the UK, the center will support and develop the growing global cell and gene therapy industry in the UK.

The England-based center, operating to GMP standards for clinical product manufacturing, will provide the global advanced therapeutics industry with the infrastructure to develop manufacturing capability and systems for large-scale cell and gene therapy clinical studies and accelerate commercialization.

The center will also supply the network of UK-based Advanced Therapies Treatment Centers formed as part of the government’s investment of £146 million ($204 million) through its Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund in medicines manufacturing. The new center provides access to the expertise, skills, facilities, and equipment needed to help organizations develop new technologies and systems for large-scale manufacturing.
