Lonza Opens Drug Product Service Laboratories
Lonza held a grand opening of its pharmaceutical drug product services laboratories in the Stücki Science Park in Basel, Switzerland. Scientists in the new 1,300-square-meter facility will focus initially on formulation development, drug product analytical development, and quality control.
The new drug product service laboratory teams is being led by Hanns-Christian Mahler, who for 10 years led the departments of Pharmaceutical Development & Supplies and Formulation R&D Biologics for Roche. His work experience in this field includes early- and late-stage formulation development, primary packaging and device development, drug product process development, process characterization and validation, protein analytics and drug product cGMP manufacturing.
In addition to providing services, such as particle testing or container-closure integrity testing, the Lonza hub offers services to detect trace impurities in pharmaceutical products, e.g. extractables and leachables from plastics used in manufacturing. All of these services are offered as standalone or as part of a drug-product development program, comprising formulation, stability, primary packaging, process development, and manufacturing.
Lonza had announced plans for the drug product serrvices laboratories in February 2016. It represents an entry in the drug product services arena for Lonza, which specializes in development and manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (small molecules and biologics).
