Pharma Action, a manufacturer of heparin active pharmaceutical ingredients, has opened a new factory for producing crude heparin in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany. The factory will start production in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Pharma Action is part of Tönnies, a meat-processing company that will provide pig intestinal mucosa, the source for the crude heparin. Tönnies, based in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany, focuses on the slaughtering, butchering, and processing of swine and cattle. Pharma Action says the facility will have capacity to produce about 60% of Europe’s demand for the traceable heparin raw material.
