US Gov’t Awards Protein Sciences Vaccine Pact in $610 Million Deal

The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, has awarded Protein Sciences Corporation, a Meriden, Connecticut-based company, a contract that is part of BARDA’s medical countermeasures against pandemic influenza and influenza strains with pandemic potential.

Protein Sciences will perform the contract using its proprietary platform technology for producing vaccines. The contract is valued up to $610 million through 2021 if BARDA exercises all options. The contract will finance preparation of starting materials for multiple potential pandemics to enable availablity of sufficient suppliers of influenza vaccines should a pandemic strick. The company makes two influenza vaccines: Flublok (seasonal) and Panblok (pandemic) influenza vaccines.
