Wasdell Group To Invest in New Analytical Lab
Wasdell Group, a Newcastle, UK-headquartered contract development and manufacturing organization and contract packager, plans to invest £500,000 ($668,000) in a new analytical laboratory at its Newcastle site.
The 1,200 square-foot facility will offer in-house microbiological and analytical services and will support the business’ manufacturing, packaging, and quality control (QC) teams. A microbiological laboratory team will perform in-house environmental monitoring, sample analysis, water testing, microbiological identification analysis, component testing, and growth-promotion testing.
The lab will also offer analytical capabilities for chemical, physical, and microbiological analysis, including high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and wet chemistry with QC testing of raw materials, drug substances, and drug products in accordance with pharmacopoeial monographs and client methods.
This investment is the first phase of the company’s ongoing expansion to support its laboratory capabilities. The second phase will include the opening of a new laboratory in Ireland to secure Wasdell’s release testing offering for the European market in the event of any issues relating to the UK’s exit from the European Union (i.e., Brexit).
The investment is the latest addition to the company’s 26,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Newcastle. It follows a December 2017 announcement by the company of a new EUR 30 million ($35 million) pharmaceutical packaging facility in Dundalk, Ireland, which will offer QC import testing, a variety of current and packaging technologies, storage, and distribution. At the time of its December 2017 announcement, Wasdell said the new packaging facility will be operational by the fourth quarter of 2018.
